"Patrrrick, you will use the ultima piccolo rig you have" ... ca voulait bien dire ce que ca voulait dire, j'allais etre dans la merde avec mon grand greement.
1er skipper meeting : "ok, we have now 16 knot, but we expect up to 25 knot wind ..." ... glouups.

1er : Michael Hestbaek (Mettler Toledo)
2eme : Tom Ruegge (Model)
3eme : Pablo Soldano (Flawless)
et au general
1er : Michael Hestbaek (Mettler Toledo)
2eme : Tom Ruegge (Model)
3eme : Flemming Clausen (Wempe)

This is the Formula One of dinghies in which 18ft Skiffs race in short sprints round cans on a course close inshore, giving a spectacular display easily watched from on land.
These remarkable machines are based on the 18ft cargo carrying workboats used early in the 20th century off Sydney harbour, where speed was essential to the fast delivery of goods.
With a choice of either a 10mtr or 8mtr mast according to wind strength, the full spread of main, jib and genneka measures 110sq.mtrs. With a total weight of only 170kg the boat can be carried into the water on the shoulders of two men. The narrow hull is extended each side by trampoline style wings giving an overall width of 5mtrs, from which the trapeze enhanced crew of three work the sails and drive the boat. The bow has a 4ft sprit to fly the genneka and is plugged at the end with a tennis ball. The overall length from tennis ball to transom is 5.9mtrs. In optimum conditions the 18ft Skiff has a top speed of 70kph as it skids over the water with only the aft third of hull and rudder in the water.
This meeting is the final of a European tour, the preliminaries being sailed from Sicily, Travemuende in Germany, Lake Garda in Italy and now from Clube de Vela de Lagos. With 15 boats sailed by the top crews from 8 countries, some of which are professionals, it has been a stunning four days bearing little resemblance to the art of dinghy racing as I have known it. Strip the hull to basics, turn it upside down and add four wheels; countersink a cockpit, attach engine, gear box and fuel tank and with Michael Schumacher at the wheel without a doubt it would win an F.1 Grand Prix.
After a strong 20knot wind from the north on Day 1 which saw half the fleet either capsized at the gybe mark, or planing like the clappers down wind with all three crew on the windward wing hidden in a curtain of spray, Day 2 was a bit of a disappointment. The scheduled 12.0’clock race was postponed while the wind settled down and crews tried to decide which rig to use after the previous evening’s chaos. After much dithering the 10minute warning sounded. Some put to sea with full mast while others chose the reduced rig; this proved to be a mistake as the expected blow failed to materialize.
Day 3 again involved a great deal of hanging about on shore. Filipe from Lagos Sailing Club, appointed Race Officer for the 4day meeting, appeared to have little say in decision making. The spokesman for the Skiffs told him what had been decided and on occasions invited a vote from the crews themselves. Democratic to a fault this was not conducive to efficient race running: but in view of the way-out design and peculiar conditions needed to get the best from an 18ft Skiff, perhaps understandable. Racing began at 4.30pm and by the end of the 3 days, only seven races had been completed.
Having gone round from north to south a strong gusty wind and torrential rain on Day 4, along with a rising sea and falling tide, made sailing impossible. Conditions in the Bay were fine but coming ashore at low water afterwards could result in much damage to these fragile and expensive machines because sails cannot be lowered nor centerboards raised while at sea. Of the anticipated 14 races only 7 were sailed, overall winners as follows:-
1)Mettler-Toledo, Denmark. 2)Model, Switzerland. 3)Wempe, Denmark. The two British boats were 6)Total Recall, 7)CCA. These being final placings for Protour 2002.
